Chicago, Illinois is considered one of the top cities in the world to visit. I have had the luxury of several trips into the "Windy City" over the years and each time the experience is slightly different. Finding a good hotel is not easy since prices consistently go higher each year. You are looking at $200+/night and probably more like $275/night for a quality hotel along the water or with city views. The city of Chicago overlooks Lake Michigan so most hotels will give you some kind of views of the water if you request it. As for the best location, try to get something right in the thick of the action along Wacker Drive or S. Michigan Avenue. The Sofitel Chicago Water Tower and The Peninsula Chicago are two of our favorites. The Magnificent Mile is a must see when in Chicago and just walking along the Chicago River near State Street is a fun time. Many of the hotels offer free service to and from Chicago O'hare airport and you can also score deals with free breakfasts as well. The weather is very cold and wintry during November to March so perhaps a spring trip is the best time to go. I was there in May one year and had a blast as the sun was out and we were able to really enjoy the water. Parking can be a nightmare and driving around the city isn't exactly easy for a tourist, so consider no rental car and walk to wherever you need to go or take public transportation. Several reviews on the Crowne Plaza Chicago Metro on TripAdvisor.com were so overwhelming good that my last trip to Chicago I stayed there and really enjoyed the 'West Loop' neighborhoods. Chicago Vacation Tips, Recommendations, and Advice: Suggestions for a better Trip!:
Chicago is a very walkable city and we suggest doing your own private walking tour via routes you find on the Internet or pay the $20/person to get a good 2 hour tour of the city. You can do the North Side tour, South Side tour, or even a night tour on Segways. Museums are another alternative such as the Field Museum, Art Museum, or Museum of Science of Industry. Shopping takes place on both State Street and Michigan Avenue. If you are traveling with children, check out Chicagokids.net to see what they recommend for activities. The Sears Tower is always a great time for families and water tours give you the vantage point of being on Lake Michigan while looking back at the incredible skyline that Chicago offers. Those traveling for leisure, give yourself 3 days to enjoy the city, take in a play at night, see the clubs, and eat at a variety of restaurants.
