Review of Country Inn & Suites By Carlson, Palm Springs, CA:

On a recent trip to Palm Desert to watch the Pacific Life Tennis Tournament, I went online to try and find a place to stay at. Many of the other hotels I had stayed at in the past were completely booked - Fairfield Inn, Hilton Garden, etc. I found the Country Inn & Suites located in Rancho Mirage that had availability. My search on Google brought up several reviews of the property and many of them were not favorable. The hotel got something like 2 or 3 stars out of 5. Given that ranking I was hesistant to stay there, but with absolutely zero rooms available throughout the area, I decided to take a chance and make the reservation for 3 nights. I personally had never heard of Country Inn & Suites in all my travels, but I'm always open to trying a new hotel chain if they offer rooms at a reasonable rate. Palm Springs is a popular destination in the spring time as the weather is warm, but not too hot and there are lots of things to do outdoors.

When you stay in the Palm Springs area there are smaller cities like Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City, Indio, Palm Desert, and Indian Wells. I have found that everything is fairly close no matter where you stay. Look for a hotel/resort that offers free breakfast or other perks that make it worth while. As for the location of the Country Inn & Suites, the address is 71-730 Hwy 111, Rancho Mirage CA 92270. Their phone number is (888) 201-1746 US Toll Free or local # is (760) 340-5516. A good map of the Palm Springs region is below so you can get an idea of where the different cities are in the area.

The Country Inn & Suites of Rancho Mirage is right off of Hwy 111 and near the intersection of Bob Hope drive. If you are approaching the Palm Desert area on I-10 from either Nevada or the Los Angeles region, take the Bob Hope Drive exit and wind past Agua Caliente Casino and take the road for about 5 miles or so. Eventually Bob Hope Drive will drop you right onto Hwy 111 and then you take a right down a 1/2 mile or so to the intersection that has the Applebee's restaurant. You can't miss the Country Inn & Suites. Their official website is located HERE. You can print out directions, check out the photos of the rooms and hotel lobby, see room rates, availability, etc. I had read some mediocre reviews online about this hotel and wasn't sure I was getting into something that was good for me and my family, but the place was 100 times better than the reviews said. Management was friendly and gave us restaurant recommendations and the rooms were clean and tidy. The only mishap occured late one night (about 11:30 PM) when someone was able to enter our room (by mistake) with a room key. I answered the door as they were entering and told them the room was occupied. They must have gone back to the front desk since they didn't return.

Amenities/Services:

In terms of amenities, the hotel is well appointed with a generous size lobby with the kitchen area off to your right as you enter. The lobby has a fireplace, computer for internet access, and a small sitting area. The rooms come with either a king or queen bed and their are some suites available as well if you need more space. All rooms feature complimentary wired and wireless high-speed Internet service, clock radios, coffee makers, TV, and iron and ironing board. The bathroom was ample size although there was no fan to help control the steam from the hot water coming from the shower. Other amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, whirlpool, fitness room, fax & photocopying services, and coin operated laundry facilities. Perhaps the biggest bonus was the free complimentary continental breakfast that runs Monday to Friday from 6 AM to 9:30 AM and on Saturday and Sunday from 7 AM to 10 AM. You can get breakfast foods like Belgian waffles, cereals, eggs, muffins, bagels and cream cheese, breads/toast, yogurt, coffee, tea, juice, milk, pastries, fresh fruit, oatmeal, and more. The overall location of the hotel is almost central to everything. We drove everyday to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden which was about 15 minutes away. You can go the other direction on Hwy 111 back towards Palm Springs and get there within about 15 minutes as well. I would recommend this hotel to families or couples looking for a convenient place to stay when visiting Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. For about $150/night you get a good sized hotel room with lots of extras. The computer downstairs in the lobby was almost always open and I was able to print out boarding passes and tickets without a problem.

Restaurants in the Area:

While you are good for breakfast at the Country Inn & Suites in Rancho Mirage, you will need to find restaurants for your lunch and dinner. There are dozens to choose from as you drive up and down Hwy 111. Some of the more common names include Applebee's, P.F. Chang's China Bistro, The Cheesecake Factory, Chili's Bar & Grill, and Marie Callender's Restaurant. One of my favorite spots is the Outback restaurant about 3 miles down the road in Palm Desert right off Highway 111. The crowds are large on Saturday nights so get there early. The Yard House is another fun restaurant that offers well over 100 beers on tap and a good pub environment. There are lots of steakhouses in the area and pizza spots. The Country Inn website (listed above) gives you a quick rundown of restaurants and websites where available.
