Reviews: Best Hawaii HotelsVacationing to Hawaii is one of the most popular travel destinations for American families and couples. I have personally been to all islands except Molokai enjoying each one slightly differently. Hotel accommodations vary by island and location - Waikiki is crowded, Lanai is secluded with beautiful resorts for couples, and Kapalua offers lots of activities for the family vacation. The first thing you will need to consider is which island you want to visit - Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai. Familes have been going to Maui for years with lots to do and see within a small area. Oahu is great if you want more of a touristy feel in Waikiki and tons of shopping. I prefer Kauai for it's diverse landscape and outdoor fun such as hiking, swimming, golf, and tennis. The Sheraton Kauai in Poipu or the Hyatt just down the street are 2 great spots if you are looking for sunshine and relaxation. Maui has condos that may be better than hotels, but the Four Seasons Resort Maui and the Hotel Hana are just 2 of the many spectacular resorts on the island. Expect to spend at least $200/night on a room and perhaps $300+/night during peak season. It seems that families always rush to the islands during Christmas or Spring Break making for a hectic trip. Try finding a week during the off-season to enjoy less crowds in Hawaii and hopefully find a bargain hotel rate. We found several deals at the time of this article with hotels offering 5 nights for the price of 6 and almost all will throw in a free breakfast during your stay. Package deals are good on airlines like Hawaiian Air or Aloha Airlines. I usually fly United out of SFO and get direct flights into Lihue or Maui.

Bring plenty of sunscreen/sunblock since you'll want to enjoy the water activities without being worried about getting sunburned. If you plan on going snorkeling it's a good idea to bring some gear from home. The rental fees will be close to as expensive as if you bought your own. A family can share 2 sets (one for the kids and one for the parents) and save some money. Food and other items are expensive on the islands since much of it has to be flown in. Eat local foods whenever possible, don't always eat at the main hotel restaurant. Try to do one big family excursion like a helicopter flight or glass bottom boat tour. I have found that the most memorable things of our vacations are those big events. Be prepared for some downtime in the hotel - bring a deck of cards, checkers, any game that fits into a small space for traveling. Rent a car for at least a day to see the different landscapes that exist on each island. Kauai offers excellent hiking just past the Princeville resort and Maui has great interior trails that go past waterfalls and lush greenery.
