Thailand is an ever increasing popular destination for Americans when they travel abroad and Phuket beaches offer a relaxing vacation for all to enjoy. The Tsunami that recently hit Thailand definitely put a damper on hotel reservations for a while as people re-evaluated the situation and many tourists avoided the Phuket area altogether. Now, tourism is starting to return in droves and the beaches of Phuket are once again becoming crowded with tourists from all over the world. For a nice map of Phuket and the surrounding beaches go to Phuket-maps.com. The top spots are Patong Beach, Kata Beach, Karon Beach, Kamala Beach, Surin Beach, Bang Tao Beach, Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Nai Harn, Cape Panwa, Chalong, Rawai Beach, Khao Lak. There is a KidzClub so parents can relax by the pool and let the kids play on their own with certified staff. Rooms start at about $60/night (US) and go up. You can do elephant treks or venture into some world class diving spots. Marriott does an excellent job with this resort and it comes highly recommended by almost all travel sites that review Phuket resorts and hotels. Phuket Vacation Tips, Recommendations, and Advice: Suggestions for a better Trip!:
Don't be afraid to go to Thailand to begin with. The tsunami was a total freak episode in 2004 and the odds of another wave hitting the beaches that size are not that high. Also, the hotels in the area want to increase tourism again so they are offering some great rates in the area around Phuket. There is on need to rent a car in Thailand if you plan on staying around the Phuket region. Just take a taxi to a nearby beach for the day if you want to get away from your hotel or resort. The big $$$ is spent on airfare getting to Thailand, but the hotels are fairly reasonable like the Burasari Resort or the Holiday Inn Phuket.
