Singapore is an exotic location on the southern tip of Malaysia. Tourism is certainly one of their largest industries with nearly 9.7 million visitors in 2006 alone. The shopping area in the Orchard Road district attracts many tourists and the latest casinos that the government wanted are definitely bringing in people from all over the world. Singapore is one of the most populated cities in the world so getting around the streets can seem like one mass of people slowly moving along. The hotels are first rate in almost all parts of the city - Orchard Road, Heritage District, Financial District, River District, Chinatown, Little India, North Downtown, and East Singapore. As we mentioned, the Orchard Road area is where most tourists try to stay if they can afford it at 5 star hotels like Hilton, Le Meridien, Meritus, Marriott, and Royal Plaza.
Four and 5 star hotels line the River District which has been slowly updated from the old warehouses to luxury hotels like Copthorne Kings Miramar and the Gallery Hotel. For those on business most likely to be in the Financial District of Singapore, check out the 5-star hotels like Marina Mandarin, Pan Pacific, and the Oriental. The Heritage District is one not to miss with buildings from the colonial era and here you will find 3 star hotels to high end luxury hotels - Bayview Hotel Singapore (3 Star), Hotel Royal (4 star), and the more budget minded South East Asia Hotel that has 51 rooms. Business travelers may want to stay closer to the airport to catch an early morning flight out. The Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel Singapore has 520 rooms and is 4-star quality, just 10 minutes from the Changi International Airport. A free shuttle will transport you to and from the airport. All in all Singapore will delight you with their food and hectic lifestyle, but the hotels are mostly clean and modern with many luxury units to choose from. Down below we have tried to list the "top hotels" in Singapore based on surveys done at Expedia and Tripadvisor.com.
Singapore Vacation Tips, Recommendations, and Advice: Suggestions for a better Trip!:
Getting aroung Singapore is easy on their MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system. We found an excellent site with a great map of the MRT with hotels that are listed near each stop HERE. Public transportation is pretty good in Singapore given they need to transport millions of people around the city each day. Definitely don't rent a car when you are in town, take taxis or walk if you have to. Visitsingapore.com is a well thought out website with tips and pointers on how to get to Singapore (which airlines), where to stay (hotel tips), restaurants to eat at (reviews), and what to see and do while in Singapore. There are museums, parks, gardens, sporting events, shows, etc. Hotels will have English speaking concierge and clerks, but once on the streets you will find many places where people just don't speak English. Be prepared with a little Malay (the official language of Singapore).
