Sydney, Australia is truly an amazing city with water surrounding it and moderate temperatures most of the year. The city has different zones to venture into with the harbor and waterfront, old Sydney, Hyde Park, the Sydney Aquarium, and much more. Hotels are everywhere throughout the city and much of it is walkable so choosing the right location is not that important. However, if you like water views then consider the Park Hyatt Sydney 5-7 Hickson Rd. The hotel overlooks the waterfront and Sydney Cove. Dawes Point Park is just a block away and an excellent walk in the evenings. Just a few blocks away is the Holiday Inn Old Sydney at 55 George St. tucked into a nice area. The rooms are spacious and range from $240-$310 in Australian dollars. Rooms at the previously mentioned Park Hyatt go from $650-$950 (Australian $$$) so you can understand why the Holiday Inn feels like a bargain.
The Menzies Sydney Hotel is ideally located overlooking Wynyard Park and is a top pick for those with families. The rooms are spacious and cost about $200/night (AUD). Get tickets to the Sydney Opera House and enjoy a night out. The heart of Sydney is only a few blocks away - see Darling Harbour or Cockle Bay. Want a more upscale hotel, then try the Shangra-La Sydney on Cumberland Street in The Rocks district of Sydney. You get views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and the Sydney skyline. There are 563 guest rooms and the Altitude Restaurant on the 36th floor has great food. For those that like casinos, the Star City Hotel offers package deals starting at about $265/night. The accommodations are first rate and the casino is always crowded. We have tried to list the "top hotels" in Sydney down below with hotels situated in different locations and price ranges to fit everyones budget. Sydney Vacation Tips, Recommendations, and Advice: Suggestions for a better Trip!:
Traveling "down under" as they say is a wonderful experience, but don't forget that their summer is our winter (at least in the US) and our summer is their winter. Christmas time for us is an excellent time to make the venture to Australia and specifically to Sydney. If you time it out right in January, you can enjoy the Australian Open tennis event in nearby Melbourne. Australia is known for its friendly people with terms like "mate", "no worries", "lift" (elevator), etc. and their beautiful beaches. Of course the outback is notorious for some of the most extreme weather conditions and deserts in the world. Don't travel outside of the city regions without some idea of where you are going and take plenty of fluids since the temperatures can reach 120 degrees. Also, there are dozens of poisonous snakes that live in Australia and one should always be watchful when off the beaten track. As for swimming in their waters, most people do just fine, but jelly fish attacks are commonplace even close to shore. If you are traveling from the United States, make sure you give yourself more than just 4 or 5 days to see the country. There are cities like Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane and natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef. The majority of the things to see are on the eastern coast of Australia with very little on their west coast. I have heard some people say they will just drive from east to west across Australia (it's an island how big can it be) and I tell them it's the size of the United States and will take quite a while to do.
