When visiting Washington DC there are dozens of excellent hotels located throughout the area that should fit your needs. Being as near to the White House and the surrounding historical sites is most important to many people. Pennsylvania Avenue is perhaps the most recognized street with the White House located on it but you can also stay on Massachusetts Ave, Connecticut Ave, or Independence Ave SW. The Holiday Inn Washington DC and L'Enfent Plaza Hotel are a short walk from the National Mall, US Capitol, Jefferson Memorial, and the White House. The Marriott and Hyatt hotels are right on 12th and 10th streets near H Street NW. Even if you stay a little farther out you can take the subway into the main monument areas within minutes.
I stayed at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel at 1900 Connecticut Avenue which is near Dupont Circle. I was able to walk down to Dupont Circle and get on the subway which dropped me off near the Washington Monument. From there you can see the Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool, or Smithsonian. The Courtyard is great for business or personal travelers with good size rooms and lots of amenities. The JW Marriott Hotel at 1331 Pennsylvania Ave is the closest hotel we could find to the White House. You are literally a block and half away and rigth near the Federal Triangle. All hotels are close to the Potomac river where you can take a boat cruise to Mt. Vernon and see where George Washington used to live. In the Georgetown area you will find another Holiday Inn that will fit the budget minded traveler just fine. DC is an expensive city to stay in and most rooms will run $175/night or higher. Some people prefer hotels with suites and the Homewood Suites located near Thomas Circle in downtown is a great hotel. We have tried to give you a "best of" list down below with hotels located throught the DC area with various locations to fit your needs.
Washington DC Vacation Tips, Recommendations, and Advice: Suggestions for a better Trip!:
When vacationing in Washington DC or there on business, you want to make the most of your free time. Washington.org is the official tourism site for Washington DC and offers loads of information and resources on hotels, tickets, events, maps of the area, etc. Learn about the subway system and what routes lead where. Find out which buses take you to the monuments and memorials. I do recommend a tour of the US Capitol building and definitely go up the Washington Monument (it was closed the day I was there). The National Museum of Natural History is a must see along with Arlington Cemetary. You will need a good 3 to 4 days if you expect to see most of what is offered in the DC area. Also, try to get over to the Georgetown area for dinner one night since there are some great restaurants and the students create a nice nightlife. A great day trip (if you have a car) is going to Monticello to see where Thomas Jefferson spent many years of his life. The drive is very reasonable and well worth the trip down south.
