Review: The Wort Hotel - Best Jackson Hole HotelsIf you're planning a vacation to the Yellowstone and Grand Tetons area, chances are you will be passing through Jackson Hole, Wyoming (if it's not on your list of places to visit, add it!). Jackson Hole is the name of the valley there between 2 mountain ranges (just 15 minutes from Grand Teton National Park), while Jackson is the actual name of the city. Jackson is a classic old western mountain town. Surrounding a main townsquare is the downtown area, encompassing about an 7x5 block region of tourist shops, restaurants, and lodging. Jackson is a popular winter vacation spot for skiing, and is even more popular in the summer for fishing, rafting, horseback riding, and general access to the nearby parks. When it comes to the best hotels in Jackson Hole, The Wort Hotel normally tops the list as both an historic and luxurious property (at least by historic western standards). This review is from our summer 2009 visit.

Charles Wort came to Jackson Hole from Nebraska, arriving in 1893. In 1917, he bought 4 lots of land (originally for a livery stable and barn) in downtown Jackson for $25, with dreams of a future hotel. His sons finally built that hotel, The Wort Hotel, in 1941, and it's been a staple on the Jackson scene ever since. Having been rebuilt from a 1980 fire, the hotel today receives the coveted AAA Four Diamond rating, and it deserves it. A smaller hotel, The Wort Hotel offers 55 rooms and 5 suites. From the outside, it looks a bit like a Swiss chalet (see the 3 photos above). Inside, it is all about the West. Entering the main door from Glenwood Street, you are greeted by a magnificent broad staircase (see photo top right, this page) that ascends to the second floor, with reception to the left. Behind the staircase is a fireplace and sitting area, decorated with western decor, complete with mounted animal heads (pictured at right). Hallways to the right lead to the famous Silver Dollar Bar (with 2032 silver Morgan Dollars encased under the see-thru top) and Silver Dollar Grill.
Wort Hotel Rooms and Rates - Jackson Wyoming HotelsThe standard rooms offered at the Wort are called "Deluxe Rooms". They run from $200 in the off-season to $329 per night during peak summer season. These rooms are very well appointed with 2 lodgepole pine queens or a single king bed, down pillows and comforters, desk, armoire, table and chairs. You'll find a stuffed teddy bear on your bed upon arrival, with turndown service each evening depositing chocolate silver dollars as a treat.
The bathrooms are all done in marble, with a walk-in shower and toilet separate from the sink area (and of course luxurious bathrobes to use during your visit). Their website (WortHotel.com) offers virtual tours of the rooms so you can see what they look like. The Grand Rooms run about $40 more and have a sofa and more sitting room.
The Junior Suites run $429 and provide a little extra living room space, as well as a wet bar. Then come the specialty suites:
- Cowgirl Suite ($630)
- Cowboy Suite ($630)
- Grand Teton Suite ($640, 2 room suite, murals of Grand Tetons)
- Shoshone Suite (around $640, Native American decor)

Wort Hotel ReviewWe arrived just after the 4th of July weekend on a Monday afternoon. We had no problem parking and unloading our bags right in front of the hotel. There is a bellman to help with bags, and he was very attentive to opening the front door as guests came and went as well. The huge central staircase draws you into the lobby and into the sitting areas both upstairs and downstairs. Check-in was quick and easy, staff polite and helpful (they reminded us to pick up free tickets to the museum which is right across the street -- not a bad place to spend 40 minutes). Family really liked the room decor, beds were super cozy -- everyone slept like a baby. The marble bathrooms were beautiful. The walk-in shower (no bath) was spacious with adjustable shower wand. This really was the nicest place we have seen in a while in small tourist town. We had one meal at the Silver Dollar Grill. The Elk Sliders were a delicious appetizer, while the trout and salmon dishes were both very tasty -- no complaints. There was no music at the bar on the night of our stay.
The hotel location cannot be beat. You are within 1-2 minutes walk of just about anywhere you need to go in town, from restaurants to bars to shopping. There is a deli around the corner to the right as you walk out the front door -- they have great bagel breakfasts. If you're planning a stay, a good half day exploring the downtown is enough for most people. We saw a lot from 3-9PM when we were passing through, including a Western shoot-out they hold nightly during the summer at the northeast corner of the Town Square. Overall, we rate The Wort Hotel an 8.5 out of 10. It certainly is not as glamorous or posh as some big city hotels, but it compares favorably with many of the nicest hotels we have visited.
To compare our own experience, we also checked with TripAdvisor.com. Out of 48 consumer reviews, The Wort received a 4 out of 5 rating. Everyone loved the location, and reviews were generally very positive. You can book a room in this hotel without hesitation (I was going to say "without reservations" -- doesn't work in this case!) -- we'll be staying here on our next visit to Jackson.
