Reviews: Best San Jose Hotels
San Jose, California is a major economic hub in the world and is best known as being the center of Silicon Valley and computer technology. Often taking second fiddle to San Francisco, San Jose offers luxury hotel accommodations and lodging options along with an international airport that goes unnoticed sometimes. Whether you are coming to San Jose, CA for business or leisure, there are literally dozens of hotels and motels that should fit your needs. The downtown San Jose region has become nicer in the last decade or so and hotels like The Fairmont San Jose
and Hotel De Anza
stand out as excellent choices if you want something near the downtown region. Another top rated hotel is the Hilton San Jose
which is located at the corner of Almaden Blvd and West San Carlos Street. The Hilton is currently undergoing a huge renovation and should be taking business travelers again very soon. All these downtown San Jose hotels are within a few miles of the San Jose International Airport (SJC) and don't require you to rent a car, just take a courtesy shuttle or hire a cab to drive the 2 or 3 miles.
If you are in town for an event at the San Jose Arena (called the HP Pavillion), consider staying close by in the Arena Hotel
offered by Pacific Hotels which is within walking distance to the SJ Arena. The Montgomery Hotel
on South 1st Street is another popular hotel that originally opened in 1911 and offers seasonal specials on room rates. In the past we would have said the The Sainte Claire Hotel
was a sure bet, but some reviews we found online for the hotel were less than positive. Still a good choice for downtown accommodations in San Jose and walking distance to most of the attractions including the Arena and Convention Center. For those needing to stay near the San Jose Airport, without a doubt the top ranked hotel is the Radisson Plaza Hotel San Jose Airport
and if the rooms are full go with the Doubletree or Wyndham. A little further afield is the Hotel Valencia Santana Row
which is a luxury hotel within the Santana Row shopping area. This newer complex has a European flare to it and may be high priced, but almost every amenity is offered at Hotel Valencia and you will be treated like royalty. San Jose is quite expansive so don't feel confined in downtown if most of your business or activities will be done elsewhere. Surrounding cities like Campbell, Santa Clara, and Cupertino all offer excellent room rates that are competitive with anything you find in the downtown region. No matter where you stay, San Jose has good freeway systems like the 280 and 101 that run along it and both Hwy 880 and the Guadalupe Freeway are incredibly convenient to get into or out of downtown San Jose. I prefer the Hilton when I'm in town but the Hotel De Anza is a classic centerpiece of San Jose. We did a few searches on Expedia.com to see what hotel rooms go for in San Jose on both weeknights and on weekends. We found that room rates for midweek stays started at about $90 for a room at the Arena Hotel and went up to $350/night at the Hotel Valencia Santana Row. Weekend rates dropped a bit, especially at Santana Row where the Valencia Hotel was down to a reasonable $229/night for Saturday night. See our top picks below for different category of hotels in the San Jose region.
Luxury San Jose Hotel:
Luxury hotels in San Jose are few, but 2 stand out to us. One, the Fairmont San Jose
is located right in downtown and the other, the Hotel Valencia Santana Row is right at the border of the city near 280 and 880. The Fairmont
is a favorite amongst Silicon Valley executives and their business associates. It's a luxury hotel located at 170 South Market Street in San Jose and you can call to make reservations at 866-540-4493. There are over 700 deluxe guest rooms and over 70 suites, all are non-smoking with high speed internet access and high end toiletries. The location is perhaps the best in San Jose and the nightlife is just outside the front doors. Room rates for a Saturday night stay in the fall were $199 for a deluxe king and $269 for a 1 bedroom suite. Another luxury hotel we couldn't not mention is the Hotel Valencia Santana Row
which can be found online The Fairmont
. Santana Row is a shopping center that currently stands were the Town & Country used to be years ago when I was a kid. The stores are high end and the restaurants are excellent. The Hotel Valencia has European styling and boasts 212 guestrooms and an outdoor pool. Rooms are routinely priced at around $300/night and this place books full more nights than not. If downtown San Jose isn't your think then consider Hotel Valencia Santana Row in a quaint and cozy corner of San Jose.
Downtown San Jose Hotels:
Looking to find a nice, convenient hotel in downtown San Jose? The Montgomery Hotel
has room rates starting at $179/weekday and $129/weekend which makes it very affordable for business and leisure travelers. The location makes the Montgomery Hotel convenient to the Museum of Modern Art, Tech Museum of Innovation, HP Pavilion and San Jose Convention center. You can find it online HERE
or at 211 South First Street in person. Self parking is available at $20/day and valet service is another option. The Paragon Restaurant & Bar is located onsite and serves up top rated dishes. The hotel has almost 100 years of experience serving San Jose travelers and this shines through. We suggest taking a short walk to try dinner or drinks at Gordon Birsch which has homemade beers and delicious food.
San Jose Airport Hotel:
San Jose Airport is expanding in leaps and bounds in the last few years as more flights come and go from this international airport. Staying close by for an early morning flight is a great idea so you can easily take the hotel shuttle bus and get on your flight without a problem. I enjoy the Radisson Plaza Hotel San Jose Airport
when I'm in town and need a hotel near the airport. The Radisson San Jose
is at 1471 North Fourth Street, only 1.5 miles from the airport. If you have a rental car to return, no problem since the hotel has complimentary on-site self parking. The rooms are spacious enough and the pool makes for a great way to cool off and relax. Room rates are from $150 to $180 a night and the service is excellent. Two other options near the San Jose Airport are the Doubletree Hotel San Jose
and the Wyndham Hotel San Jose
. Both receive fairly good reviews online although the Doubletree rates a bit higher and is only about 1/2 mile from the airport and just 45 minutes from San Francisco International Airport if that is where you are headed. Rates are much higher than the Radisson at $240/night.
Hotel Near San Jose Arena:
I've been to many San Jose Sharks games over the years and seen countless concerts at the San Jose Arena (HP Pavillion) and the place that many people say they are staying at is the Arena Hotel
that is just steps down the road. The address of the hotel is 817 The Alameda and it's only a few blocks from the arena. Run by Pacific Hotels, the Arena Hotel has almost 90 guestrooms with kings, queens, and suites to choose from. You can quickly get freeway access to 101, 280, 880, and Hwy 87. The rooms feature 27" tvs, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and complimentary wifi internet service. Room rates midweek are $100 to $120 and weekend rates can be even cheaper. You can find the hotel online
