Reviews: Best Chico Hotels

Chico is a small city near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains just north of Sacramento, California. This sleepy town is more notorious for it's partying college coeds (Chico State University) than probably anything else. Nearby towns include Paradise, Orland (along I-5) and Oroville. It's probably not the type of place you'll happen to be driving through since most of the people heading north into Oregon take the bigger I-5 freeway. Chico is a reasonble spot to stay the night if you are heading to Lassen Volcanic National Park (about 70 miles away). Hwy 99 and 32 cut right through the middle of Chico and the university is near this intersection. I happened to be heading home from Kings Canyon National Park and a friend of mine lives in Chico so it worked out.

If you want to stay near the downtown area and Chico State University, then consider the Hotel Diamond Chico on 4th Street which gets excellent reviews or the Days Inn on Broadway or the Vagabond Inn Chico on Main St. A little farther from the college are the Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott which are located on Carmichael Dr which is off exit 383 on Hwy 99. I stayed off exit 387A on highway 99 at the Holiday Inn Chico. The Super 8 was literally right next store as you exited off Mangrove Avenue. The Holiday Inn was just a few miles from CSU and the downtown area which was perfect for us. We went to dinner at a place called Annie's Asian Grill which served up some excellent Korean Ribs and sushi. For business travelers the two Marriott properties are worth a look. The Marriott Courtyard in Chico has reasonable rates and cozy rooms while the Residence Inn is better suited for longer stays but the nightly rates are considerably higher. The Oxford Suites is another hotel location that gets excellent reviews from TripAdvisor as a good "value" stay. No matter where you choose to stay in Chico, you should be relatively close to all the activities in and around the downtown and university areas.

Chico, CA Vacation Tips, Recommendations, and Advice: Suggestions for a better Trip!:

Chico is very close to all that the Sierra Nevada mountains offer. You are only a few hours to Lassen Volcanic National Park, Lake Almanor, and Lake Oroville. During the summer months the city itself is quiet as all the college kids are home but things do become lively again when the first classes start. If you have time for 1 meal in the city, consider a relatively new restaurant called Annie's Asian Grill. It's a Korean BBQ spot with sushi, ribs, Teriyaki chicken dishes, and some cold beer. It's located at 243 W. 9th Street and there is limited parking right in the front parking lot. The food was delicious and the owners are in the restaurant almost all the time. The outdoor patio seating area is ideal on the warm evenings in the summer. We recommend the Holiday Inn off Mangrove for it's spacious rooms and great breakfast.
