A vacation to Disneyland or Disneyworld just isn't the same without.... tickets to the park! After airfare, hotels rooms, over-priced food and souvenirs, the last thing you want to do is overpay for park tickets. You may be a little overwhelmed when you see all the Disney ticket options - multi-day, multi-park, annual passes. In this guide, we will cover what you need to know about buying tickets for both Disneyland and Disneyworld, and we'll tell you how to save money by buying discounted Disney tickets.
Discounted Disneyland Tickets
For decades, Disneyland operated on the A-E ticket system, where you would buy booklets of tickets, with better rides having costlier tickets. Then Disney switched over to all-day passes that offered unlimited rides (well, limited at least by the long lines!), and that is still what is offered today - individual passes that allow the holder to ride as many rides as they can in a single day. But with the opening of Disney California Adventure Park, just across the plaza from Disneyland, another wrinkle is thrown in the mix with the "Park Hopper" ticket. What is a park hopper ticket? It is simply a ticket that allows you to visit both parks in the same day, rather than buying separate tickets for both parks. These tickets are priced at a slight premium over regular tickets, so depending on your plan, it may or may not be worth it. Here is a listing of the tickets available for Disneyland, and their prices (you'll note that for single day tickets, park hopper options cost $20 more than single park tickets):
Single Day Theme Park Ticket (either Disneyland or California Adventure, NOT both) - $63 for ages 10+, $53 for ages 3-10, free for kids under 3
1-Day Park Hopper Ticket (allows entry into BOTH Disneyland and California Adventure during the same day) - $83 for ages 10+, $73 for ages 3-10, free for kids under 3
2-Day Park Hopper Ticket (allows entry into BOTH Disneyland and California Adventure during the same day) - $122 for ages 10+, $102 for ages 3-10, free for kids under 3
3-Day Park Hopper Ticket (allows entry into BOTH Disneyland and California Adventure during the same day) - $179 for ages 10+, $149 for ages 3-10, free for kids under 3
4-Day Park Hopper Ticket (allows entry into BOTH Disneyland and California Adventure during the same day) - $209 for ages 10+, $179 for ages 3-10, free for kids under 3
5-Day Park Hopper Ticket (allows entry into BOTH Disneyland and California Adventure during the same day) - $229 for ages 10+, $199 for ages 3-10, free for kids under 3
NOTE: These are all gate prices for buying tickets in person at the gate. Online, you will receive a discounted price for the 3-5 day Park Hopper tickets, $20 less for 3 days, $30 less for 4 days, and $40 less for 5 days if you buy them in advance.
Deluxe Annual Passport - 315 pre-selected days of admission to the park (not on most spring and summer Saturdays, and not during main holiday times) - $239 for all over age of 3
Premium Annual Passport - go any day of the year, no blackout dates - $359 for all over age of 3
You'll see a few sites claiming to offer discount admissions to Disneyland, but all the ones we checked were within about $2 of the official Disney prices -- what's the point in taking a chance buying from some 3rd party to save $1? The best discounts we saw were on the official Disneyland site, where you could save $20-$40 per ticket by buying 3-5 day park hopper tickets in advance instead of at the gate -- not a bad deal. If you are a AAA member, check with your local office -- they sometimes offer slight discounts on Disneyland tickets.
Discount Disney World Ticket Prices
Since Disney World is so much bigger than Disneyland, ticket prices and combinations become even more confusing. The biggest discount you get is by buying multiple day tickets. For example, a 3-day ticket for adults is $192, but a 8 day ticket is just $212 -- that's right, $20 extra for 5 more days of park visits. So while a 3 day trip to Disney World may be expensive, staying a few more days is really just the extra nights lodging, so consider that in your planning. Disney World tickets come in a few flavors. The most basic is the one theme park per day ticket, allowing you entry into either Magic Kingdom, MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom, or EPCOT. These parks are all within 5-15 minutes of one another, so if you want to visit multiple parks in a single day, then you choose the Park Hopper option, that let's you visit multiple parks in any given day. But since this is hot and humid Florida, Disney also has two water slide parks here for your entertainment, so you can buy tickets that also let you into the water parks anytime as well. You'll find many sites offering discount or supposedly cheaper Disney World tickets, but the ones we looked at offered no real savings. As an example, from the official Disney World site were quoted a 4 Day Adult Park Hopper ticket for $245, while a "discount ticket" site listed the same 4-day pass for $250.75 -- we'll let you do the math, but don't count on saving much or any money by buying cheap tickets from somewhere besides the official Disney site. We did find one site that had SOME lower prices, but it was hit and miss. Sometimes the same tickets were $9 more than Disney, sometimes they were $10-$20 less, depending on the number of days and options selected - you can check them yourself to see if you can save some money, but it probably won't amount to much -- Floridaticketstation.com.
When it comes to deciding what type of tickets to buy, you'll need to consider a few things. Tickets are available in 1-10 day packages, with a "no expiration" option, meaning you can use some of your days this trip, some the next. However, Disney is not just trying to be nice with this option -- it is almost as expensive as buying separate tickets anyways. For example, if you are planning to separate 5 day trips to DW this year, you could buy a 5 day ticket each time ($206 basic ticket per adult) or a 10-day no expiration ticket, and use it on both trips ($371). As you can see, you'd save only $30 or so by choosing the no expiration option. Anyways, here are the official ticket prices from the offical Disney World website (Disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/tickets/ticketStore):
1-Day Single Park Ticket - $67 ages 10+. $56 ages 3-9
2-Day Single Park Ticket - $132/$110
3-Day Single Park Ticket - $192/$160
4-Day Single Park Ticket - $202/$168
5-Day Single Park Ticket - $206/$169
-- Adding additional days adds only $2 to the ticket price for all days after 5
Adding the Park Hopper option (allowing you to go to multiple parks the same day) adds about $40-$45 to the ticket package price (same for adults or kids)
Adding the Water Park Option adds an additional $40-$50 onto the total package ticket price
For example, a 4 Day base ticket for adults is $202. Add the Park Hopper option and it is $245, add the Water Park option and it is $285.
Again, you can check all the possible combination tickets at the official Disney site listed above.
