Hallmark Inn & Resort Cannon Beach:

If you are planning on making a trip to the Oregon coast, consider spending at least one night in Cannon Beach. This seaside town is just south the junction where Hwy 26 meets 101. Cannon Beach offers a bit of everything and on a recent trip out there I was able to stay the night at the Hallmark Inn & Resort. I had previously stayed at the Hallmark in Newport (Oregon) and was pleasantly surprised at the accommodations and location. The Cannon Beach Hallmark Inn is another excellent hotel with oceanfront rooms that overlook the beach and famous Haystack Rock. Our room was on the 2nd floor (room 234) and had a separate bedroom with queen bed and a wall bed (king) in the living area. The walk out balcony made for great pictures as we had near perfect weather. The unit was clean and the kids loved the fact they had their own bedroom with a tv. The hotel room had a fireplace, mini kitchen area with refrigerator, and Internet access. I would say the balcony was a huge benefit given the blue skies and Haystack Rock just off the beach. We watched a beautiful sunset in the evening and then awoke to the calm sounds of the waves coming ashore in the morning.

The hotel is located off Hwy 101 - take the Sunset Blvd exit and follow it until it dead ends into Hemlock. The resort is just to the left and you can take the driveway up to the main entrance. You can rent houses and suites that are near the main resort as well giving you plenty of options depending on the size of your party. The Hallmark also accepts pets and has pet friendly rooms available. The majority of the rooms overlook the beach down below and on clear days the views are amazing. You can look north up to Ecola State Park and see the wonderful rock formations in the ocean as well as see the lighthouse just off the coast. Find the Hallmark on the web at Hallmarkinns.com - you can view rooms, see the rates, set your reservation, ask questions, etc. Their phone # is 888-448-4449. There is an interactive map with complete directions from Portland. If you plan on staying for a while the hotel has a guest laundry facility and kitchen suites. There were a few minor things wrong with plumbing fixtures in our room - bathroom sink stopper was broken, the bathtub hot and cold water knobs kept popping off, and the couch had a decent size stain under the cushions. Otherwise, the room was perfect for us. The one thing that might have been nice was an onsite restaurant. You can cross the street to Dooger's, but we decided that the downtown area of Cannon Beach would be a better spot to find food.

Room Rates - Discount Pricing:

How much are hotel rooms in Cannon Beach? Depend on the time of year. During portions of the summer a two night minimum is required at many places and the rates are closer to $200. We were lucky enough to get a $110/night winter rate - they offer Web Specials on the website and we suggest checking those out before making a reservation. The room types are oceanfront rooms, oceanview, suites, and rental houses. Choose from king beds, queen sico beds, queen and twin beds, 2 bedrooms, and more. The two bedroom suites are roughly $200/night and the 1 bedroom rooms are much cheaper. If you can stay on a weeknight the rates drop even further. They run promotions all the time so get on their email list and watch for discount rates or coupons and package deals.

Pool and Beach Access:

The one plus to staying right on the ocean is having access to the beach. At the Hallmark Resort Cannon Beach, you literally can walk down a few stairs and be right on the beach overlooking Haystack Rock. You can take a stroll along the coastline either north or south. The beach is normally quite windy, but we had a very calm day (after a storm) and it was even impossible to fly our kite. The beach is flat and perfect for pets or a morning jog. Our kids did have the chance to play with their sand toys one afternoon when the sun was shining. As for the pool at the resort, it's not bad. The pool area was clean and we were the only ones using it. There is a small kids pool that is tiny - I think it was 1 foot deep in about a 6 foot diameter mini pool. The larger pool was up to 6 feet deep and there was plenty of room to swim around. The pool was heated and there is also a hot tub and whirlpool if you want hotter water to sit in. There are shower facilities right at the pool - I advise using them since the smell of chlorine was pretty strong while in the pool room. It's open daily from 7AM to 10PM. There is an adult swim, but that runs in the morning from 7 to 8:30AM.
