I am not a regular user of the Hilton hotel chain, but on a recent trip to Cancun, Mexico I decided to go with Hilton since their resort in the "hotel zone" seemed amazing from the website. Firstly, any trip to Cancun will probably be memorable, but the Hilton Cancun is set on 150 acres that include a golf course and beach front access to the Caribbean. The hotel as a 4 diamond rating and is currently listed as a category 6 in the Hilton HHonors Reward program which means it will cost you about 40,000 points for 1 night. The golf & spa resort features 426 guest rooms (including 82 private villas and 23 suites). The pool with swimup bar is incredible - there are 7 Infinity pools to choose from and your kids will spend all day just wading around in the water. The Hilton also offers up 700 yards of beach so you can enjoy the Caribbean waters as well or relax in a lounge chair with an umbrella.
The hotel features a 30,000 square foot meeting space with space for up to 2000 attendees. When I was staying there in October there was some sort of business convention but not alot of the attendees were out at the pool which was fine with us. The Hilton Cancun hotel is shaped like an ancient pyramid structure with 3 distinct arms that give it a very historic feeling. The grounds were lush and the new spa facilities are great (says my wife). The official website for the Cancun Hilton hotel can be found online
HERE. You can book your room online, research the accommodation types, check out the golf course and rates, read up on the dining options onsite, or look at some pictures of the resort.
The restaurant and food choices are plentiful with 5 places to eat at onsite. The first is Spices, a great spot for breakfast with a nice buffet that the kids enjoyed probably more than us. There is traditional Mexican food for dinner with a decent taco bar. For lunch we tended to eat at the poolside, outdoor restaurant called Kiosko which offers sandwiches, burgers, tacos, and more. At night, the Pizza and Pasta restaurant was ok, just not what I would have wanted being that we were in Mexico after all. If you have children, then at least you know you can get them to eat something here. Our favorite spot was the Mitachi Seaside Grill with seafood and fine cuisine. The desserts at this place kept us coming back throughout our week at the resort. The kids did enjoy the Latin music band that played at the restaurant. It overlooks the Caribbean and is a great spot to be at when the sun starts to go down. Casual attire is fine at all the restaurants but if you wanted to dress up one night then Mitachi would be the place to go. We did venture down to Le Meridian Hotel one night but we were thoroughly disappointed with food based on the prices of items.
Accommodations include standard, deluxe, and junior suites, as well as the garden and oceanfront villas. The standard rooms have oceanviews of the Caribbean Sea and you get cotton bathrobes and slippers to lounge around your room. The rooms are ample sized and the views are (especially from the upper floors) are excellent. We had a deluxe guestroom with a balcony that included a sitting area. For the extra $20/night, the balcony was nice to have since we ended up being in our room with the kids after hours. The room had 2 queen size beds (you could get the kind size bed) and the bathroom was nicely appointed. The villas are the way to go, but I don't have Hilton HHonors points so staying in them was too expensive. "Villa guests receive daily continental breakfast and evening hors d'oeuvres & cocktails in our exclusive Villas lounge, a dedicated Concierge for check-in, check-out and other personalized services" says the Hilton Cancun website. The private villas are located on the opposite side of the pool from the main hotel. Room rates vary by season but we found prices to be very reasonable at around $140/night (deluxe room with 2 queen beds). I know that peak season can be closer to $200/night but compared to some of the other hotels in the area, the Hilton offers great value.
Directions and Transportation:
The Hilton Cancun Resort is about 15 to 20 from the Cancun International Airport. There are plenty of transport shuttles to choose from or you can rent a car. Having a rental car in Cancun is not necessary by any means since most of the attractions are either at your hotel or a short taxi ride into the town or to other hotels. If you do want to get a rental car for trips down to the Mayan Riviera or out to Chichen Itza, then go for it. When you are leaving the airport, take the main exit road and just follow the signs that point you towards the "Hotel Zone" or Zona Hotelera. The road will turn into Kukulcan Blvd and the Hilton Cancun resort is located near kilometer marker 17. The bus services charge about $9/person to get to and from the hotel from the airport and a taxi will run you $30 USD. If you have a rental car, it will cost you $5/day to park at the Hilton Cancun or $7 if you do valet parking.
Entertainment - Leisure:
Finding a golf course in the Cancun area is not easy with only a few around. The Hilton, however, offers an 18-hole championship golf course onsite. The par 72 layout takes you through the ancient Mayan Ruins and around the Nichupte Lagoon. The course was fun to play but not worth the $100+ green fees which they charge. The spa at the Hilton Cancun is a recent addition and seems to be thriving with female guests to the resort. I even saw quite a few guys emerge from the spa looking rejuvenated. Get a stone message, a relaxation wrap, re-hydrating facials, aroma massage, etc. There is also an onsite fitness center if you need a good workout or try the tennis courts. For those that can't live without their Internet connection, you can get wireless access throughout the resort (for a fee).
