The often forgotten airport in the Los Angeles area is John Wayne, or Orange County, airport. The airport is located right on the border of Santa Ana and Irvine. If you are going to southern California to visit Disneyland in Anaheim, then SNA airport is the best choice if you can find a convenient flight. Burbank and LAX are other options, but you will have to drive further to Disneyland and deal with world famous traffic found in the Los Angeles region. I recently took a trip to San Diego and then drove up to Disneyland with the family and then flew out of John Wayne Airport on the way home since it was so easy. The rental car returns are right on site and you can quickly walk across the street to the main terminal which isn't that big. The one thing that makes this airport unique is that when you take off, you will hear the roar of the jet engines as the pilots are forced to do a rather straight up takeoff in order to meet the noise and flight pattern restrictions in that area. They will warn you before you take off that it will feel a little different than usual. My kids thought it was exciting. There is plenty of room once inside the terminals although the security area was a bit confined. Otherwise, with the great weather in California there are few delays at this airport and flights depart and arrive on time.
Driving Directions to John Wayne Airport:
The address for John Wayne Airport is 18601 Airport Way, Santa Ana, CA 92707. You can approach the airport on several different routes with the San Diego Freeway (I-405) being the most popular. You could take the Costa Mesa (SR-55) Freeway or the Corona Del Mar Freeway/San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Toll Road (SR-73) as well. If you are on the I-405 going north or south take the MacArthur Blvd off ramp and follow the signs to the Terminal Roadway. As for traveling on the SR-55, take it all the way to the I-5 interchange and then get off at the John Wayne Airport exit. The signs are pretty well marked no matter which way you come from. Down below is a good map of the Orange County Airport.

John Wayne Airport Terminals - Airlines Served:
There are just 2 terminals (A and B) at John Wayne Airport which should make things easy and you can see maps of the terminals with gates included HERE. There are ATMs, restrooms, restaurants, and other pertinent information listed on the maps. We have tried to give you gate and terminal information for each airline below:
Terminal A - Gates 8-14: Airlines Served are Alaska, American, American Eagle, Continental, Delta, Delta Connection, and Skywest.
Terminal B - Gates 1-7: Airlines served are Aloha, Frontier, Mesa, Northwest, Southwest, United, United Express, and US Airways.
Parking - Short Term vs Long Term:
Like many airports, Orange County is now offering Valet parking as a service for folks that don't have time to park their own cars and just want to get out at the terminal and leave the car with an attendant to park. This new service will cost you $23/day (flat rate for the first day and $5/hour thereafter). It's definitely an option for families that have strollers, carseats, and luggage to carry. The Terminal parking is $1/hour and tops out at $17/day in the short term parking lot. If you go with the long term parking in the Main Street Parking area, you are looking at $12/day. You can get a good idea of where the parking lots are located on the parking maps HERE.
Airport Shuttles, Rental Cars, Taxi, and Limousines:
Rental Cars - I always prefer flying into airports that have rental cars located on site. It's much faster to get the car and check-out than having to get on a shuttle bus and go off-site somewhere to get your rental car. John Wayne Airport offers a nice selection of on-site rental cars from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty. Just walk from the terminal to the parking garage and get your car. There are also off-site rental car companies available like Advantage, AM-PM, Beverly Hills, Fox/Payless, Rent4less, and United Auto Rental. You will need to catch the rental car shuttles for those companies and get taken off-site to their remote locations. You can get websites and phone #'s for each rental car company HERE.
Limousines - There are over 100 limousine companies that service John Wayne airport and they must all be pre-arranged. You can find a complete list of limousines service HERE.
Taxis - Cabs are very convenient when you are looking to go just a few miles. Ask your hotel if they offer a FREE shuttle service to their hotel as many people overlook this option which is the easiest. Taxis charge about $2.65 for the first 1/5 mile plus an additional $.50 per 1/5 mile after that. Yellow Cab Service is run out of the airport at 800-535-2211. More details on taxi fees is available HERE.
Door to Door Shuttles - Taking a shuttle can dramatically reduce the cost you pay to get to your hotel or destination. The one big drawback is that you have to make several stops along the way that may not be yours, so it can take an extra 20 minutes to get where you are going. For longer trips it is worth a shuttle service, but otherwise we say go with a cab/taxi when only traveling short distances. You can find sample fares and phone #'s for all the shuttle services at the airport HERE
