Apart from Canada, Mexico is the closest "foreign" destination for US tourists, and for those who live in California or Texas, it is just a quick flight away. A vacation in Mexico can reward you with warm weather, beautiful beaches, and just the right mix of foreign culture to let you unwind and enjoy your trip. The main Mexico tourist cities along the West Coast are as follows, north to south: Los Cabos (tip of Baja Peninsula), Mazatlan (mainland, across from Los Cabos), Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Costa Alegre, Ixtapa, Acapulco, and Huatulco. On the east coast of Mexico, the main vacation spots are: Merida, Cancun, Mayan Riviera, Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel, and Chetumal. The strip of land from Texas to the Yucatan is pretty much devoid of resorts and vacation spots. If you play your cards right, you and a friend can be basking on a sunny beach for almost a week, for just about $100 a day per person - not bad!
Mexico Trip - Acapulco
Acapulco is on the southwestern coast of Mexico, and is a large resort town. This is the town of the famous cliff divers of Mexico, and one of the original Mexican resorts. The city is still famous for its massive nightclubs and lively nightlife scene. Not really the spot for a quiet family vacation. July and August are the hottest months in Acapulco, usually topping out in the low 90's, with temps in the 80s the rest of the year. Options for lodging include hotels, resorts, or home and villa rentals. Some of the most popular Acapulco hotels are Las Brisas, Quinta Real, Camino Real Acapulco Diamante, El Cano, Crown Plaza Acapulco, Fiesta Americana, Hotel Copacabana, and Mirador. The Mirador (1.866.765.0608) looks out over the cove where the cliff divers jump - the balcony and ocean view rooms are the best. Rooms are inexpensive and simple - usually less than $100. Las Brisas is a lot fancier, set up on the hill with over 200 casitas, each with semi-private pools and amazing views of Acapulco Bay. Rooms here go for $150-$500, depending on time of year and location. The private pool casitas are the most desirable and expensive. OwnerDirect.com has listings of homes and villas for rent. Flights to Acapulco can sometimes be challenging to arrange. Continental flies direct from Houston, while America West flies direct from Sacremento and Phoenix. American offers direct flights from Dallas. Mexicana and Delta and others offer plenty of flights into Acapulco, but most connect through Mexico City, so will have to endure an extra leg on your journey if you choose these airlines.
Cheap Mexico Vacation Packages
Rather than buying plane tickets and hotels reservations separately, you can sometimes save money by buying a Mexico vacation package. PleasantHolidays.com offers a lot of vacation packages to all the popular Mexican resort towns. A sample 4 day/5 night stay at NH Krystal Puerto Vallarta is $436 per person, including airfare (with Los Angeles departure). How about 4 nights at NH Krystal Cancun for $506 per person? Or 4 nights at Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa, Cabo San Lucas for $609 each? They offer a lot of variety of accomodations and locations. Orbitz, Expedia, and TRavelocity also offer combination vacation packages for Mexico. Sample Cancun vacation packages at Orbitz include options to stay at the Le Meridien Cancun Resort & Spa, the Camino Real Cancun, The Gran Melia Cancun, or the The Ambiance Villas, all with different amenities. For a family of 4 travelling to Cancun in Sept, costs range from $550 per person at places like Margaritas Cancun, Terracaribe Hotel, Best Western Cancun Clipper Club, to $1400 per person at the posh Le Blanc Spa Resort, all inclusive. A more middle of the road option is the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, at about $900 per person. Located right in the middle of the Cancun Hotel Zone, each room here has a private balcony and ocean view - just what you came to Mexico for! TropicalTravel.net is another good site for Mexican Travel Packages. How about 7 nights in Acapulco at the Copacabana Beach Hotel for $720 per person, including airfare (from Houston)? Or the same deal at the Ritz Carlton Acapulco for $759. Prices are about $100 higher for departure cities like New York, Philly, Boston, etc.
Finally, consider Sun Mex Vacations (ITMCO.com). They've been organizing and planning Mexican vacations since 1996.
