New York Vacation: Walking around MidtownMidtown New York is the entertainment and business center (outside of financial firms on Wall St.). Radio City Music Hall is here. Times Square is here. Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center skating rink, Saks Fifth Avenue, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, it's all here. The Empire State Building is your most southerly stop here, at 5th Ave. and 34th St. Buy your tickets in advance at ESBNYC.com (print them out on your own computer - about $15/ea give or take) - then skip the huge line to buy tickets and head straight to the huge elevator line (oh well, you miss one line!). You'll be whisked to the highest point in New York (now that the WTC is gone) with amazing views. There is both an inside and outside observation decks. Visiting at sunset is nice as you watch the lights come up over the city. But be prepared for an hour or more wait for the just the elevator ride.
New York Vacation Ideas and TipsThe outdoor skating rink is at Rockefeller center, with the towering GE building above and the golden statue of Prometheus watching over you. The Today show is filmed in the studio to the left, and you will often see those wild sign-waving crowds on a weekday morning. Just across 5th avenue is the majestic St. Patrick's Cathedral, the largest Catholic church in the US. JFK lay in state here. Just off 5th and 53rd, check out the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). This 6 story giant houses works ranging from Picasso to Andy Warhol - some is breathtaking, some makes you say "What the #%^@#!". At $20 a pop, its a little expensive, but worth the visit at least once, even if you are not a huge modern art fan. Central Park begins at 5th Ave. and 60th - also known as Central Park South. The famous Plaza Hotel is on the corner here, looking like a giant Baroque palace. On the other side of 5th is the famous FAO Schwartz Toy Store, also known as kid-heaven - enter at your own risk! Thirty blocks north on 5th brings you to the Metropolitan Museum (the Met). With gorgeous exhibits covering Egyptian and Roman and Greek art, modern art, European paintings and statues, and entire rooms recreated for your pleasure (Italian courtyards and gardens, Egyptian temples, and more!). If you are planning just a brief visit, take advantage of the "suggested" ticket price and pay whatever you want for a ticket.
