Portland International Airport - PDX:Whether you are arriving into or departing out of Portland International Airport (PDX), it's pretty easy compared to other larger airports on the west coast like SFO, LAX or Seatac. PDX has 5 terminals that service major airlines like Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, Horizon, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Mexicana, Northwest, Southwest, United, and US Airways. What I like about Portland, OR airport is that they offer some excellent nonstop flights to destinations like Frankfurt, Germany, New York (JFK on JetBlue), Honolulu, Maui Kahului, Tokyo (Narita on Northwest), Dallas and Chicago. When I first moved to Portland, Oregon back in 1999, the airport was much more limited with very few direct flights to major cities but now they have taken on a whole new dimension with departures to desirable locations without having to stop over in other cities. The main, or official, website for Portland International Airport is located online at Flypdx.com
Directions to PDX (Portland Airport):Driving to PDX is rather simple, depending on which direction you are coming from. A good general map is shown below with Portland International Airport located near the Columbia River and the 205 Freeway. From downtown Portland you are looking at a 30-40 minute drive varying on the time of day and commute traffic.
As you can see on the map above, you will need to take highway 84 east out of the downtown Portland area to get to the airport. Another route is coming up Hwy 205 and taking the Airport Way West exit off I-205 which will lead you to the PDX terminal area for both departures and arrivals. You can print out full driving directions to PDX on the main website for the airport HERE. PDX is located right at the border of northern Oregon and southern Washington along the Columbia River that splits the 2 states.
PDX Terminals - Airlines Served:Once inside the airport, there are 5 main terminals in PDX (A,B,C,D, and E). The PDX terminal map can be found in a PDF format online HERE. The page is interactive and shows you where you can find ATMS, service counters, currency exchange, elevators, mail drops, restrooms, security, and waiting areas. The seating areas near the gates are ample and provide plenty of seats for all passengers (unlike those in smaller airports like San Jose, CA or Burbank). We have tried to give you gate and terminal information for each airline below:
Terminal A - Big Sky Airlines, Horizon Airlines
Terminal B - Alaska Airlines, Horizon Airlines
Terminal C - Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, US Airways
Terminal D - Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, Lufthansa, Mexicana, Northwest Airlines, United, United Express
Terminal E - Air Canada Jazz, Jetblue Airways, United, United Express
Parking - Short Term vs Long Term:Parking has become more complicated at PDX in recent years, but you can still usually find a short term parking space even on the busiest of weekdays. The real problem is that short term parking has risen to $24/day and $3/hour at PDX which makes it a less likely solution. Certainly for day trips or overnights, short term parking at PDX is worth the cost (especially if your business picks up the expense). Long term parking is located just beside the short term parking garage at the airport and cost $14/day. The lot is not covered, but there is a security fence and it's well lit. If you plan on traveling for an extended period of time or just want to save on parking fees, go with the economy lot that charges just $8/day (7th day is FREE). The economy lot has a red and blue section - free shuttles run from the terminal to the lots every 7-9 minutes from 4 AM to midnight and every 15 minutes from midnight to 4 AM. The new Quick Pay payment option in both the short term and long term parking lots make it easy to use your credit cards or debit cards to pay for the parking fee. They take cash, VISA, AMEX, Mastercard, Discover, and Diners Club. For a complete map of the parking at PDX, go HERE. The overhead map will show you where each lot is located along with fees and the times the shuttle buses run back and forth from the terminals to the parking areas.
Airport Shuttles and Ground Transportation for PDX:Whether you need transportation to or from PDX, there are lots of options available to you. If you are arriving into PDX and need a taxi, shuttle, town car, hotel van, or parking lot shuttle, go to the center section of the airport terminal on the baggage claim level. You can find airport shuttles and the TriMet MAX Red Line Train in the same vicinity. Rental cars can be found in the short term parking garage nearest the PDX terminals. Just follow the signs after you pick up your luggage in the baggage claim area. Airport shuttles service all the hotels in downtown Portland and cost about $14 (one way) while taxis are about $30 (one way). Taking a taxi is certainly the fastest way (besides the MAX train) and if you can split the fare with another person or two it's pretty cheap too. Check with your hotel beforehand to see if they offer a courtesy shuttle back and forth to the Portland airport for FREE. The Trimet MAX train is really convenient if your hotel or final destination is near one of the stops. The cost is only $2 from PDX to downtown Portland which makes it very economical. If you're looking to find and reserve PDX ground transportation (limo, shuttle, cab, etc.) in advance, check out Discount Portland Airport Shuttle Service. You can see how prior customers have rated these transportation companies, see what kind of services they offer, and get free online quotes or make reservations.
