Renting a car from Ontario, CA Airport (ONT):

Firstly, Ontario International Airport (airport code ONT) is a smaller sized airport compared to LAX, SFO, or San Diego. I have used this airport many times as a way to avoid the high airline fees associated with flying into Palm Springs. Often the rates from Portland, OR (PDX) are almost double to fly into Palm Springs versus Ontario airport. The drive from Ontario is about 75 miles into Palm Springs and takes a little over an hour without traffic. All the main rental car companies like Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty have locations at the Ontario airport.

The rental cars at the Ontario airport are technically on site but you do have to take a shuttle bus from the main terminals to the Ground Transportation Center (GTC) which is only a few minutes drive and out past Terminal 4. The shuttle bus comes by every few minutes and takes you directly to the rental car center. If you are renting from an off location rental car company like Rent 4 Less, then you will have to catch further transportation once at the GTC. Rent 4 Less is located at 1336 E. You will notice it is just past Terminal 4 and parking Lot 5 on Airport Drive and Haven Ave. The rental car shuttle bus runs 24 hours a day at Ontario and comes by every 5 to 7 minutes (per their website) although departures are not as frequent between 1 AM and 5 AM.

When you actually go online to rent the car just enter the code or promo discount # and save $$$$. Some companies like National Rental Car allow you to combine certain coupon ID and contract ID's giving you the largest savings of all. Often you will be able to get free car class upgrades or even be able to rent a premium car for the price of a midsize.
