Sacramento International Airport - SMF:Sacramento Airport may not be a main stop for many travelers, but I find myself stopping in there quite often on my flights from Portland, OR into California. Southwest Airlines uses Sacramento (airport code SMF) as a stopover for many flights and the airport is definitely becoming more popular. The airport is not too big and offers a nice play area for kids when you do have a layover and some downtime on your hands. A good map of the Sacramento International airport can be found in PDF form HERE. There are 2 main terminals (A&B) and the gates are near each other so even if you have a connecting flight it will only take a few minutes to get to your departure gate. I find the airport to be less crowded than those in the Bay Area and prefer to fly through Sacramento if I have to stop anyway. Their official website can be found online at Sacairports.org/int/ and the site is loaded with information on arrivals, departures, maps, transportation, and parking fees/rates.
Driving Directions to Sacramento International Airport:We found the website for the Sac airport to be one of the few that doesn't provide written directions on how to get there. They rely more on Yahoo maps to visually show you how to approach the airport. Although I like maps, I prefer some written directions as well. It is rather easy to get to the airport, it is just north of the main Sacramento city area off of I-5. Take Airport Blvd. into the airport, just follow the signs from the freeway. You can get driving direction online with maps HERE. The actual address is Sacramento International Airport, 6900 Airport Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95837.
Sacramento Airport Terminals - Airlines Served:If you like small airports, then you will love flying into or out of Sacramento. There are just 2 terminals at Sacramento Airport which should make things easy and you can see maps of the terminals with gates included HERE and HERE. They offer daily flights to Boise, Burbank, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orange County, Los Cabos, San Diego, Portland, Salt Lake City, SF, Seattle, and Vancouver. We have tried to give you gate and terminal information for each airline below:
Terminal A - Gates A1 - A18 - Air Canada Jazz, Delta, Hawaiian, Southwest and U.S. Airways.
Terminal B - Gates 31-37: Express Jet, United, American and Aloha. Gates 21-27: Alaska, Continental, Horizon, Mexicana, Northwest, Frontier and JetBlue.
Parking - Short Term vs Long Term:Short term parking at SMF is pretty reasonable. Short term/hourly parking is located on the lower level of the garage -- rates are $2 per half hour, and from $27-$29 per day (as of 2010), depending on which garage you are in. Daily parking rates are for levels 2-6 of the garage by Terminal A, and come in at $15 per day. The Economy parking lot rates (long term parking) are $9/day. You can get a good idea of where the parking lots are located on the parking maps HERE. They accept payments of cash, VISA, American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Diner's Club. The shuttle bus service from the Economy Lots runs about every 15 minutes so give yourself enough time to park, catch the shuttle, do your check-in and get through airport security. Check with their website for the latest information on parking rates and construction availability.
Airport Shuttles, Rental Cars, and Taxis:
Rental Cars - If you plan on renting a car in Sacramento Airport, you will need to get on the Rental Car Shuttle which stops at each Terminal. Taxis - You can find the taxis lined up in the ground transportation area of the airport, which is near the baggage claim area in Terminal A. Terminal B has taxis across from the airport hotel. A one-way fare between the airport and downtown Sacramento is roughly $27. You can get a roundtrip fare for $50. More details on taxi fees is available HERE.
