With the unimaginable success of the Apple iPod, there has been rampant speculation about the release of an Apple branded iPod cellphone. But at CES 2007, Apple upped the ante by completely reinventing the cellphone as we know it. With the introduction of the Apple iPhone, Apple has introduced a whole new concept in the world of music, telecommunications, and online connectivity. The iPhone not only plays and syncs all your video and music files like an iPod, it is also a full fledged cell phone, working on the Cingular network to make and receive phone calls. It also handles email, web browsing, and SMS text messages. Keep reading to learn more about the introduction of this new entry in the world of cell phones.
iPhone - iPod Cell Phone
Apple has brought their popular Safari web broswer and OS X operating system to a portable computing device. The iPhone is much more than just a cellphone or MP3 music device. It features a new multi-touch display interface, allowing you to touch and interact with a screen as never before. You can quickly browse, scroll, and zoom with just a finger-tip in this new interface. There is also a pop-up QWERTY keyboard that is also touch sensitive, allowing you to quickly type emails or URLs for web-browsing. This leaves you with an uncluttered interface - no buttons, no keypads, no thumb typing keyboards. The touch keyboard is intelligent too, catching and fixing mistakes as you type, and anticipating your words to make for quick, easy typing when composing emails or SMS messages.
Overall, we think the web browsing is the most impressive. With the full power of Apple's OS X operating system and the Safari web broswer, you get the first full, rich HTML experience on a cell phone device. You can see webpages in their full detail, them zoom in to focus on the areas that are of interest to you. Built-in is instant access to Google and Yahoo maps and search, making it easy to quickly access all the online knowledge of the internet at your fingertips. With OS X, you also get a complete calendar, Notes, Address book, and much more. And with multi-tasking, you can be downloading email and files while web-surfing or composing text messages. When it comes to wireless, the iPhone uses quad-band GSM , and also works on Cingulars EDGE network, 802.11 WIFI, and Bluetooth, allowing you to connect wherever you are. Another neat feature is the various built-in sensors. The most obvious is the one that determines how you are holding the iPhone. Turn it sideways and it automatically switches to landscape mode for wide-screen viewing. Switch it back to a vertical orientation, the screen automatically orients itself accordingly. Another sensor detects how close it is to your face, and turns off the screen when held up to your ear for phone conversations, saving battery power. How much does the iPhone cost? It will be available only from Cingular in June of 2007 priced at $499 or $599, depending on the amount of memory installed (4GB or 8GB). Cingular signed up for a multiyear exclusive agreement with Apple, so if you want the iPhone, you will need to become a Cingular customer. Details about discount for trading in an old phone or signing up for a multi-year contract were not available. When it comes to music and video, they call it a widescreen iPod, with a 3.5" widescreen LCD. It automatically syncs with your PC or Mac to keep your music collection up to date, along with your web browser bookmarks. When it comes to text messaging, the iPhone intelligently connects all your message with someone on a subject, providing a scrollable log of comments and messages, making it easy to keep track of an ongoing conversation. Voicemail is also handled differently, more like email. You can see what messages you have, who they are from, and click on the ones you want to hear, without having to listen to all the messages chronologically like most phones.
