The world of cell phones is constantly changing, with new features and upgrades being added every few months. There are camera phones, video phones, phones that play MP3 music, the famous razor thin phones, phones that handle email and web surfing, the list goes on. The only problem with this is once you buy a phone, you find yourself wishing you had the latest cell phone a few months later. Most of the cell phone providers (Cingular, Verizon, T Mobile, ) know that the latest phone models attract new customers, so they have special "activation" discount prices on those phones -- sign up for a new 1 or 2 year wireless plan and get a phone for free or for several hundred dollars off the retail price.
Again, these discount plans are normally for new accounts only, but to keep people from cancelling their service with one company and then restarting it with another, most wireless providers allows exisiting users to also take advantage of these discounted cell phone upgrade programs. Sometimes you have to have been a customer for a certain length of time - sometimes you can only upgrade once per year or 18 months. In almost all cases though, you need to extend your contract commitment in order to receive the free or discounted phone.
Cell Phone Upgrades
T Mobile has plans allowing you to upgrade to the latest phones, including camera phones, video phones, and music phones. Their upgrade plan depends on the length of your contract. If it is a 1 year wireless plan, you can upgrade to a newer phone if it has been 11 months or more since your last upgrade. On two year plans, it needs to be 22 months since your last upgrade. In either case, you then get the discounted phone price and have to extend your wireless service contract for an additional one or two years.
Verizon Wireless has a plan called New Every Two, which allows you to upgrade to a new cell phone every two years, getting either a free digital phone up to $100 in value, or getting a $100 credit on another phone of your selection.
Many times, the restrictions on these upgrade plans can be loosened. We have found that you get different answers when you visit retail stores/kiosks, websites, or when you call the company direct, as to what upgrades are available to you. Make a few calls, send a few emails, and see if you can get a deal on a new phone if that is what you are after.
