Motorola PEBL cellphone V6: Reviews, Pictures, Price

Seems like Motorola is hooked on a new naming system for all their cell phones - RAZR, ROKR, PEBL. Of course they'd get an F for spelling, but an A for design and creativity. The Motorola PEBL cell phone is the latest in this family of stylish cell phones from Motorola. A little thicker and heavier than the RAZR, the PEBL does indeed feel like a pebble or small stone in your hand with its rounded shell design and solid heft. The outside of the PEBL is pretty spartan, with a small monochrome LCD (32x64) screen which displays date and time and called ID info.

A push of the Motorola logo on the front and it pops open to reveal its 176x220 (262K TFT) pixel color screen (same as RAZR). It has a plastic keypad that also resembles the metallic keypad of the RAZR. Video capture abilities are built into the PEBL (MPEG-4), but the size and quality make it more appropriate for a childs toy - you won't be burning these movies to DVD and watching them on your HD TV screen. The VGA still camera is a little better, but these pictures, like most cell phone camera pictures, are meant for fun and capturing silly, spontaneous moments, not for award-winning quality photos. The camera has a 4X digital zoom.

Motorola PEBL camera phone, ringtones, MMS

Photos can be sent via MMS to other cell phones, making it pretty easy to share quick snapshots. You can also take photos of people and associate them with their phone number, so their faces appears during CallerID to show you who is calling - pretty nice, but we've seen it before. It terms of messenging, the PEBL comes with iTAP predictive text technology, where the phone anticipates the words you are typing and automatically completes them, saving you a lot of key pecking. Bluetooth capabilities are built into the PEBL as well, making it easy to use wireless Bluetooth earpieces. One nice feature is support for MP3 ringtones, allowing you to store up to 7MB in internal memory (which is a LOT of ringtones). The Motorola PEBL also supports AAC ringtones and sounds. The phone connects via a mini USB to your computer for charging and exchanging data, making it easy to copy over free mp3 ringtones to your phone.

The PEBL comes with a 820-mAh Li-Ion battery that provides over 200 hours of standby time and up to 8 hours of talk time. The phone is quad-band (global GSM) like the RAZR for minimal problems while travelling internationally. Another interesting feature the PEBL comes with is speaker independent voice recognition. This allows you to make calendar entries, call people by name, and even play MP3 files, all recognized by your voice commands. In practice, we found this worked OK - some things we got to work perfectly every time, but others required 3 or 4 attempts to make it work. In the future, this Motorola technology will be a little more polished and will make cell phone use much easier when it comes to interacting with the internet, processing email, etc.
