News, Review, and Pictures of the new Motorola ROKR iTunes cellphone - iPod in a phone!

Cingular, Motorola, and Apple have teamed up to bring the world of the iPod to the world of the cell phone, with the new ROKR phone with iTunes and complete MP3 music capability built right in. You run the iTunes software on your PC, plug in your phone (via USB) and download up to 100 songs onto your phone. The ROKR phone itself has built in stereo speakers, but of course the included ear buds are a better choice for decent sound. More pictures below..

The ROKR of course is a phone first, portable MP3 player second. So it is smart enough to stop the music when a phone call comes in, and start right back up again once you are done with the call. You can also listen to music while text messaging. The ROKR weighs in at 3.7 oz., about standard for modern small phones. Talk time is up to 6 hours. Built-in VGA (640x480) camera is also included for those spontaneous snap shots. It has a 176x220 262 color TFT display screen. As of the launch, the phone is available only from Cingular

Cost.. Price is $249 with a 2 year cellular service agreement (uh, lets see, $40 a month times 24 months = only $960!). I think adding MP3 functionality to the cell phone is a good idea - why carry two devices around? While the iTunes drag and drop interface is good (although seemingly slow on these phones), the 100 song limit cap will be a problem for some, as will be the price. At some point in the future, you will likely see streaming songs and downloads via your cell phone, so storage may not be such a big issue. But with limited battery life, that will still be some ways off, and for now the option is something like the new iPod nano (see link below) or a combo phone like this.
