Polyphic Ringtones - Master Tones - Real Tones

From the early days of electronic beeping cell phones, ringtones have come a long way. Ringtones allow you to select different sounds, songs, or tones to hear when your phone rings. Polyphonic ringtones appeared in the late 90's, allowing you to create and use more complex music, with harmony and melody and rhythm combined, making the music sound a lot better but still very "electronic" - not real music. All the major wireless companies offer these ringtones - Verizon Wireless, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint, and T-Mobile. The cell phone manufacturers also support ringtones on almost all makes and models of cellular phones - Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Kyocera, LG, Ericsson, and many more.

Now, however, there are even better ringtones available. Master tones are snippets of the actual original song, much like a few seconds of an MP3 digital song. These are also called true tones. There are several services online that help users get these ringtones - normally you pay a fee per song (around $2 right now), or a monthly subscription fee and then get free master tone downloads. This is a big business - in 2004, it is estimated that over $4 billion dollars worth of ringtones were downloaded. In some Asian countries, ringtone sales now are greater than actual music CD sales. Since both polyphonic and master tones ringtones use copyrighted material (the songs) as their source, they are legally required to pay royalty and licensing fees to the publisher and artist, while master tones also require payment to the record label that produced the song. That is the main reason you can't find legitimate sites where you can download FREE polyphonic ring tones or FREE master tones.

However, going forward, as more and more phones begin to introduce features to play MP3 files and download songs and connect to your PC wirelessly or via a USB cable, chance are you will soon be able to grab pieces of your favorite digital MP3 tunes and use them as ringtones on your cell phone - it is a commonly accepted practice that you are entitled to make use of digital assets you own in various formats, and once the user gains more control over how and what gets into his phone, not many people will be paying $2 for 10 seconds of a song for use as a ringtone. Also popular now are ringback tones - little clips of songs people here in the background while they wait for you to answer your phone (think of it as real short hold music). Greenday has been doing promotions for Verizon highlighting using their music as ringtones.
Most sites let you sample the tones before downloading them. Many of the wireless carrier sites will automatically bill you for ringtones you download from their site - this makes the transaction easy (no credit cards, no online forms to fill out), but you may be in for a surprise at the end of the month when your cell phone bill jumps by $20 for those seemingly free ringtones you downloaded. At $2 a pop, they add up. Hip-hop ringtones are the most popular genre, and most ringtones are downloaded by people under the age of 35, with teenagers being a key market, as with music CDs.

How do I get Started With Ringtones

In order to get started, you will need to know who your wireless carrier (Verizon Wireless, Cingular, etc) is. You will also need to know the manufacturer (Nokia, Motorola, Kyocera, Samsung, Ericsson). Then find a style of ringtone you want. Many cell phone companies will allow you to use some free ringtones to sample them. Most will cost $.25-$2.00 with some monthly plans offering all you can download for a set price!
