The arms race for wireless phones seems to know no bounds. Phone companies keep packing more and more features inside, with the latest must-have items being large touch screens displays, good keyboards for messaging, and full web browser internet access. The Apple iPhone really led the charge in usable web browsing, offering the complete version of its Safari web browser built right into the phone, with innovative touchscreen interactions allowing the user to zoom in and out and drag web pages around the large phone screen, bringing the "real internet" to a cellphone for the first time. But the iPhone has been out for a few months now, and rivals are beginning to circle, most recently with the announcement from Verizon of new phones for LG, namely the LG Voyager (also known as the Voyager VX10000).
LG Voyager VX1000 Cellphone
Following Apple's design, LG has made a wireless phone with a large touchscreen and minimal buttons on the outside case. Apple solved the keyboard problem by creating a virtual onscreen keyboard for the iPhone, but LG takes a different path. This interesting phone opens up along its long side, clamshell style. And inside, guess what you find? Yet another large, bright display screen, stereo speakers, and a full QWERTY keyboard for email and text messaging. So you use the touch interface outside screen for some tasks, open it up and use the full keyboard for more input-intensive tasks. Pretty cool. The big test will be to see how their full HTML browser will work, and how one will navigate through large web pages. Unlike the iPhone, there is no WiFi support built-it, but internet access via Verizon wireless connection. The touchscreen is supposed to support flick, taps, and drag finger movements for scrolling and moving through menus. The phone will also offer Bluetooth support for headsets and speakers. As part of the Verizon network, the LG Voyager will also come with MediaFLO streaming video and V CAST video and music features. It will play mp3, wma, and aac files. The rest of the features include a 2MP camera and an expandable microSD memory slot for up to 8GB of file storage. Pricing is expected to be close to the $399 iPhone price, and the phones should be availabled in November.
Samsung Juke Verizon Music Cellphone
The other new offering announced by Verizon was the Samsung Juke, also known as the U470. This is a slide open candy bar style phone, with a screen that swivels. This narrow phone hides a narrow 3-key wide numberpad beneath its sleek surface, supports A2DP Bluetooth, offers 2GB of storage for music files, and has a 1.3MP camera. It has a USB connector to plug right into your computer for music downloading. This is a pretty small phone, especially when compared to the iPhone or the Voyager, but it is quite a bit thicker than similar music offerings from Apple or Sandisk. The Juke should sell for $99 when available in November 2007.
